General-purpose AI model (GPAI)

AI model capable of performing a wide range of distinct tasks.

Art. 3(63)Art. 51Art. 53

Definition

A general-purpose AI model displays significant generality and can competently perform a wide range of distinct tasks, regardless of how it is placed on the market. Obligations for GPAI model providers — documentation, copyright policy, training-data summary — have applied since August 2025. They fall on the model provider, not on merchants using the model's output.
