Google Merchant Center × EU AI Act
Google Merchant Center AI rules — and what Shopify merchants actually need to do
Google asks for machine-readable signals in your Shopping feed (especially IPTC on AI images). The EU AI Act asks deployers for visible labels shoppers can see. EU AI Label handles the storefront labeling workflow — we do not embed IPTC for you. That remains a provider job. Paid plans will soon auto-detect AI photos by reading metadata that providers already left in the file.
Not legal advice. Google Merchant Center policy and EU AI Act Article 50 are separate regimes.
Google's crawl vs your shopper's eyes
Merchants often mix up two requirements. Keep them separate:
| Audience | Regime | What “AI disclosure” means |
|---|---|---|
| Google Merchant Center | AI-generated content help article | Machine-readable signals in the product data / image file Google fetches |
| EU shoppers on your store | EU AI Act Article 50 (deployers) | Clear, visible disclosure on AI-generated or AI-modified product photos at first exposure |

EU AI Label is built for the second column. We stay out of the first — except as a reader of metadata for upcoming auto-detect.
What support.google.com/merchants/answer/14743464 asks for
Per Google's Merchant Center guidance on AI-generated content:
1. AI-generated images
All generative-AI images used in:
image_linkadditional_image_linklifestyle_image_link
…must include IPTC DigitalSourceType metadata, typically:
- TrainedAlgorithmicMedia — created with a model trained on sampled content
- CompositeSynthetic — composite that includes synthetic elements
- AlgorithmicMedia — purely algorithmic (no sampled training data)
Google also says: don't strip those tags if a generative tool (e.g. Product Studio) already embedded them.
2. AI-generated titles
Use structured_title with:
digital_source_type = trained_algorithmic_mediacontent= the AI title text
…instead of (or as required alternative to) plain title.
3. AI-generated descriptions
Use structured_description with the same pattern instead of plain description.
Note: These are feed / file requirements for Shopping ads and free listings. They are not the same as a visible “AI-generated” badge on your Shopify product page.
IPTC is a provider need — not a merchant (or EU AI Label) need
Under the EU AI Act, machine-readable marking of synthetic outputs (watermarks, C2PA-style signals, IPTC Digital Source Type, and similar) sits primarily with providers of generative AI systems — Article 50(2).
Deployers (most Shopify merchants publishing AI product photos) have a different duty under Article 50(4): make disclosure recognisable to people — typically a clear, visible label at first exposure on the relevant photo.

We will not claim that EU AI Label “makes you GMC IPTC compliant.”
Providers should emit DigitalSourceType. Merchants should keep those tags when possible and add visible labels for shoppers. EU AI Label does the visible part.
How EU AI Label maps to Google's rules
Honest mapping — what we do today, what we don't, and what's coming.
| Google / GMC requirement | Who owns it | What EU AI Label does |
|---|---|---|
| IPTC DigitalSourceType on AI images in the feed | Providers embed; merchants should not strip; feed host must preserve | Does not embed. Coming soon on paid plans: auto-detect AI photos by reading IPTC / C2PA / related metadata when present, then suggest labels for merchant approval |
| Don't remove existing generative-AI metadata | Merchant tooling / CDN / feed pipeline | We never rewrite image files — Theme App Embed overlays only — so we don't strip provider tags |
| structured_title for AI titles | Merchant feed / Merchant Center / Google channel | Not supported (out of MVP). Product-photo labeling only |
| structured_description for AI descriptions | Merchant feed / Merchant Center / Google channel | Not supported (out of MVP) |
| Shopper-visible AI disclosure on the product page | Deployer (Art. 50) | Core product: text-first labels via Theme App Embed, tooltips, localization, WCAG-oriented defaults |
| Keep Shopping / Meta feed images free of burned-in badges | Merchant ops | By design: overlays render in the browser; crawlers fetching the raw image URL see a clean file |

If you run Google Shopping with AI imagery, treat GMC metadata/feed rules as a separate checklist from your EU storefront labeling workflow — or ask your agency / feed tool to handle structured_* and IPTC preservation.
Paid plans: auto-detect from provider metadata
Coming soonMany generators already write IPTC Digital Source Type or Content Credentials into the file. When that signal survives upload, EU AI Label will be able to:
- Read provenance metadata (IPTC / C2PA and related fields)
- Flag likely AI-generated or AI-modified product photos
- Ask for your approval before turning on a visible storefront label
Important: Auto-detect consumes provider metadata. It does not replace the provider's duty to embed it, and it does not push IPTC into Google Merchant Center for you.
The storefront workflow Google's help article doesn't cover
Tag AI product photos
Mark AI-generated or AI-modified photos in admin — manually today; metadata-assisted auto-detect on paid plans soon.
Publish visible labels
Theme App Embed places text-first labels on or next to the photo at first exposure — no theme-code edits, no file watermarking.
Keep a record
Metadata logs / audit trail of labeling events for internal ops and conversations with counsel or partners.
Will IPTC survive on Shopify?
It depends on the upload path and the exact URL Google fetches.
- Some Files CDN URLs can retain XMP IPTC Extension tags after Shopify re-encodes the JPEG.
- Product media pipelines and transformed CDN URLs (width, crop, WebP) may strip metadata.
- For GMC, what matters is the exact image_link Google crawls — not whether a private original on your laptop still has tags.
Merchant takeaway: Ask your image provider to embed DigitalSourceType. Verify the live feed URL with a metadata tool (exiftool, etc.). Separately, run a visible labeling workflow for EU shoppers — that's EU AI Label.
Use this page if you…
- Sell on Shopify and use AI product photography
- Also run Google Shopping / free listings
- Were told you “must add IPTC for the EU AI Act” and want a clear split of duties
- Want storefront Article 50 labeling without burning badges into feed images
Skip the myth
“IPTC alone makes a Shopify store Article 50 ready.” Machine-readable tags help providers and Google's crawler. Shoppers need a visible label.
FAQ
Do merchants have to embed IPTC under Article 50?
Machine-readable marking is aimed at providers (Art. 50(2)). Deployers publishing AI product photos should focus on clear visible disclosure (Art. 50(4)). Keep provider tags when you can — don't treat embedding IPTC yourself as the core merchant duty. Not legal advice.
Does EU AI Label add IPTC DigitalSourceType for Google Merchant Center?
No. We do not write IPTC, C2PA, or EXIF into image files, and we do not override Merchant Center feeds.
What is “auto-detect” then?
A upcoming paid-plan feature that reads existing provider metadata (when present) to suggest which product photos need a visible label — with merchant approval. Detection ≠ embedding ≠ GMC feed sync.
Will visible EU AI labels break my Google Shopping images?
Labels render via Theme App Embed in the shopper's browser. They are not burned into the image file, so feed crawlers that fetch the raw image URL still see a clean asset.
Do I need structured_title / structured_description?
Only when titles/descriptions in your Merchant Center product data were created with generative AI — per Google's spec. EU AI Label does not manage those feed attributes in MVP (we focus on product photos on the storefront).
Is Google Merchant Center the same as the EU AI Act?
No. GMC rules are Google platform policy for Shopping data. Article 50 is EU law about transparency toward people (and provider marking duties). You may need to think about both if you sell in the EU and advertise on Google.
Where can I read Google's rule?
Label AI product photos on Shopify & WordPress — without touching IPTC
Providers mark files. Merchants show shoppers. EU AI Label runs the visible labeling workflow — and paid plans will soon auto-detect from metadata providers already embedded.
Not legal advice. EU AI Label supports transparency workflows; it does not provide legal counsel or certify Merchant Center or Article 50 compliance.
