Examples of AI labels for Shopify product photos
Good Shopify AI labels are short, clear, and specific. Examples that consistently perform in user testing include “AI-generated image”, “AI-altered photo”, and “Contains AI-generated product photo”. This is a copy-and-paste library of labels you can use today — plus the ones to avoid, and starter translations for EU markets.
The best AI label is the one a shopper understands the moment they see it. That rules out internal creative terms, vague marketing language, and abbreviations that require explanation. The examples below are ready-to-use across Shopify product pages and product cards.

For multi-language stores, translated labels reduce ambiguity. These are practical starter translations — validate with a native speaker if you're publishing to that market.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Should the label say “generated” or “altered”?+
Use “generated” when the image is substantially AI-created. Use “altered” when a real photo was materially changed with AI. If a gallery mixes both, label each image individually.
Can the label be branded?+
Brand styling — colors, typography, corner radius — is fine as long as the disclosure remains clear, readable, and distinguishable. WCAG 2.1 AA contrast (4.5:1) is the floor.
Should I translate the label for multi-market stores?+
Yes, ideally. Localised labels are easier for shoppers to understand at first glance, and align with the EU Code of Practice principle that disclosures must be understandable to the audience.
Is “AI” alone enough?+
No. A two-letter abbreviation with no verb doesn't tell the shopper what happened. Pair it with a verb: “AI-generated”, “AI-altered”, “Generated with AI”.
Can I use emoji or symbols?+
Not on their own. Emoji or symbols can accompany text, but the disclosure must be readable and unambiguous without them (screen reader users won't hear a decorative symbol).
What about product videos or lifestyle reels?+
AI-generated or AI-altered video should be labeled with equivalent wording — for example “AI-generated video” or “Contains AI-generated footage”. Video labeling is on our roadmap; the MVP covers product photos.
