The transparency gap
AI product photos are becoming normal. Disclosure workflows are not.
Many Shopify stores now use AI-generated product shots, AI-edited backgrounds, synthetic models, or AI-enhanced lifestyle photos. The EU AI Act introduces transparency obligations for certain AI-generated or manipulated content, and merchants need a practical way to show clear labels where shoppers actually see the content: on the product page.
EU AI Label helps merchants create a consistent labeling workflow for product photos without asking the team to edit theme code or manually maintain badge snippets.

CoP-aligned labeling principles
Designed around clear and visible disclosure
The EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content (Section 2, Article 50) allows labels to use different sizes, colors, contrast levels, and typography — as long as disclosure stays clear, accessible, and distinguishable at first exposure.
Clear text, not icons alone
Text labels outperform icon-only badges in EU user testing.
Placement that travels
Default top-right of the product photo, clear of sale badges.
Contrast checks before publish
Auto-contrast keeps labels readable on light or dark photos.
Screen-reader friendly
Real text and descriptive aria-labels, not background images.
No theme-code editing
Installs through a Shopify theme app extension.
Visible at first exposure
No hover or click required to see the disclosure.
EU AI Label supports merchant transparency workflows. It is not legal advice and does not guarantee compliance.

FAQ
Common questions
What is the EU AI Label app?+
EU AI Label is a Shopify app (with a companion WordPress / WooCommerce plugin) that helps merchants add clear, visible labels to product photos that were generated or modified with AI. It's built specifically around Article 50 of Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 — the EU AI Act — which requires deployers of generative AI content to disclose that content to end users in a clear and distinguishable way. The app handles the labeling workflow, storefront rendering, multilingual copy, and a public compliance page, so you don't have to touch theme code or maintain badge snippets by hand.
Does EU AI Label edit my images?+
No. The app does not modify, re-encode, or overwrite your image files. Under Article 50, deployers (merchants) are only required to make AI-generated or AI-modified content clearly recognisable to end users — the regulation does not force you to alter the pixels themselves. EU AI Label satisfies that obligation by rendering a visible, accessible label on top of the product photo through a Shopify theme app extension. Your original image assets stay exactly as you uploaded them.
Does it preserve C2PA or IPTC metadata?+
No, and it doesn't need to. Article 50 places the transparency duty on deployers (you, the merchant) to make the disclosure recognisable to end users — machine-readable provenance signals like C2PA manifests or IPTC "Digital Source Type" fields are aimed at providers of AI systems, not merchants. In practice this is also a Shopify constraint: Shopify's image pipeline re-encodes and strips most embedded metadata on upload and CDN delivery, so C2PA/IPTC data usually doesn't survive anyway. Our approach — a visible, human-readable label at first exposure — is what Article 50 actually asks of a Shopify or WooCommerce store.
How is the Shopify photo labeling actually rendered?+
Through a Shopify theme app extension. You pick which product photos are AI-generated or AI-modified (single or bulk) in the app dashboard, choose a label preset (for example "AI-generated" or "AI-modified"), and the label is injected on top of the product image on the storefront. There is no theme code editing, no Liquid changes, and no manual snippet maintenance — uninstalling the app cleanly removes the labels.
Where should the label appear on the product page?+
The EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content recommends placing visible disclosures where they don't conflict with other overlays and where shoppers see them at first exposure — without needing to hover, click, or scroll. Our default is the top-right corner of the primary product image, clear of Shopify sale badges. Position, size, radius, and typography are configurable on paid plans, with contrast guardrails so the label stays readable on both light and dark photos.
Do you have a WordPress / WooCommerce plugin?+
Yes. Shopify is our primary platform, but we ship a companion plugin for WordPress and WooCommerce stores. The Free tier is fully open-source on GitHub and works on any WordPress theme via a shortcode or block; the Pro tier adds bulk labeling, AI-detection assist, and the same audit log as the Shopify app. You can join the WordPress waitlist and grab the free plugin from the /install-wordpress page.
Do you onboard agencies and multi-store merchants?+
Yes. Agencies preparing multiple Shopify or WooCommerce clients for EU AI Act workflows can onboard through the /partners page ("For agencies"). You get a shared workspace across client stores, priority support during setup, co-branded compliance pages, and founding-agency pricing while we're in early access. If you manage 5+ stores, email damian@euailabel.app and we'll set up a private install call.
Does the app support multi-language storefronts?+
Yes. Badge text and tooltip copy translate dynamically based on the shopper's country and Shopify Markets locale — French ("Généré par IA"), German ("KI-generiert"), and other EU languages ship out of the box. This matters because Article 50 requires the disclosure to be understandable to end users, which in practice means the shopper's own language.
Can I customize the label styling to match my brand?+
Yes. On paid plans you control colors, shape, typography, size, position, and border radius, and you can pick from certified template libraries (official EU icon set and standardized ai-label.org formats). The app enforces WCAG 2.1 AA contrast checks and screen-reader-compatible text so brand customization doesn't break accessibility or the "clear and distinguishable" test in Article 50.
What does the Centralized Compliance Hub do?+
It publishes a public /pages/ai-transparency page on your storefront with a single toggle. That page names you as the Deployer under Article 50, explains how AI is used across your product photography in the shopper's language, and links to your audit log of labeled photos with signed-at timestamps. It gives regulators, journalists, and shoppers one canonical URL to reference instead of scattered disclosures across product pages.
Is this legal advice?+
No. EU AI Label is a workflow and transparency tool that helps merchants add visible AI disclosures aligned with Article 50 and the EU Code of Practice. It is not legal advice and does not guarantee compliance — you should confirm your exact obligations with legal counsel, especially if you operate in regulated verticals like health, finance, or children's products.
